4 Sounds You Don’t Want Your AC Making

woman-holding-hand-to-ear

Combating the humid temperatures of summer is much easier with a functional HVAC unit on your side. Generally, homeowners will use their HVAC units a lot more during the spring and summer months. If you want to keep your air conditioner reliable, you need to become familiar with how it operates. The more you know about your HVAC unit, the easier it will be to spot potential repair issues.

When ac repair issues are present, you will probably notice a number of unfamiliar noises. As soon as these noises are detected, you need to call in professionals to take a look. Below are some sounds you don’t want your HVAC system to make.

1. Strange Hissing Noises

The right amount of refrigerant is one of the main things an HVAC unit needs to produce cool air. HVAC units typically have two copper refrigerant lines. Over time, these lines can start to corrode. When refrigerant lines are compromised, you will probably notice a hissing noise coming from the outdoor portion of your HVAC system.

This hissing is caused by the pressurized refrigerant escaping through small holes in the copper lines. Getting these lines replaced will require some professional assistance. Once an HVAC technician has replaced your damaged copper lines, they will recharge your unit with the proper amount of refrigerant.

2. Loud Shrieking

During operation, most residential HVAC units make very little noise. If you start to notice an uptick in the amount of noise your unit is making, then you have to take action. Units that consistently make loud mechanical shrieking noises might be experiencing issues involving worn-out motor bearings.

If these bearings are replaced quickly, it can result in the blower motor getting permanently damaged. Due to the complexity involved in replacing these bearings, you will need to hire a professional to handle this job.

3. Your Unit Sound Like It’s Rattling

Are you hearing a rattling sound coming from your HVAC unit? If so, the first thing you need to check is the metal cabinet door on the inside portion of your unit. If this door has been left unlatched, it can produce these rattling noises.

Once you rule out a loose cabinet door as the root cause of this problem, you need to consider having your blower fan checked out. In some cases, a bent fan blade or a damaged blower fan can cause these rattling noises to occur. The best way to avoid these problems in the future is by having this component replaced.

4. Grinding Noises Are Never Good

If you start to detect a grinding sound coming from y our unit, you might be dealing with a poorly lubricated motor. When the internal parts in your blower motor are poorly lubricated, they will be exposed to lots of friction. Eventually, this friction will damage these internal parts and stop your HVAC unit from working. This is why you need to call a reliable HVAC professional as soon as these grinding noises surface.
